Missing last weekend’s American Black Film Festival was a matter of life and death for “Claws” star Niecy Nash — but it’s hard to say which one.

Media members at the South Florida film fest were expecting Nash to attend a Saturday afternoon Q&A with her TNT cast mates including Karrueche Tran. Regretfully, that plan changed in the days leading up to the festival, according to one press member, who claim organizers told them that “a death in the family” would prevent Nash from joining her colleagues on stage Saturday.

But on Saturday afternoon, Nash was spotted 1,300 miles away from Miami celebrating the marriage of LL Cool J’s daughter Italia Smith at Sparkling Pointe Vineyards and Winery in Long Island.

And there didn’t seem to be a corpse in the house when Nash joined singers Mary J. Blige and Monica, as well as Magic Johnson’s wife Cookie and comedian Bill Bellamy at the joyous union.

Niecy Nash stars in the TNT series “Claws.”

While the champagne was flowing in Long Island, Tran, along with “Claws” stars Judy Reyes and Janine Sherman-Barrois, participated in the scheduled Q&A that followed a screening at Miami’s Colony Theatre on Saturday afternoon.

When asked about Nash’s alleged funeral plans, a rep from TNT said, “She had a conflict that weekend and was unable to attend” and suggested we contact her personal rep with further inquiries. Nash’s rep also said her client “had a schedule conflict that weekend” and claims she did not know the “personal circumstances” behind the absence. American Black Film Festival reps did not respond to requests for comment.

It’s only fitting that there’d be drama behind a promotional event for “Claws,” which TNT’s website calls a “wickedly funny meditation on female badness set in a South Florida nail salon.” “Claws” airs on Sunday nights.
