If Scarlett Johansson can take transgender roles, trans actors can take her roles, right?

A group of trans video stars, Justin Chow, Scott Turner Schofield, D’Lo and Rocco Kayiatos, partnered with INTO, Grindr’s online lifestyle magazine, to audition for some of Johansson’s most famous roles, including Anna in “He’s Not That Into You,” Charlotte in “Lost in Translation” and Natasha Romanoff in “The Avengers.”

Schofield eventually won the role of Samantha in “Her.”

“Is this a female role?” Schofield asked an off-screen “director” who confirmed that the character was a white female.

“Sorry, I’m just having trouble because cis women are actually really marginalized in Hollywood, you know, and I know that there are people who have lived this experience who would bring a lot of authenticity to it and I feel a little weird about taking that from them. Thank you so much for the opportunity and no thanks.”

The tongue-in-cheek video is a response to Johansson’s recent casting as Dante “Tex” Gill in “Rub & Tug,” the true story of a massage parlor owner in Pittsburgh in the 1970s and ‘80s who ran fronts for prostitution rings. In a 2003 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette obituary, Gill was identified as Lois Jean Gill and with female pronouns.

Johansson, who also faced outrage for her whitewashed role in “Ghost in the Shell,” hasn’t spoken publicly about “Rub & Tug,” but her rep defending the move.

“Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” the rep told Bustle.
